How to get to Alberobello, the capital of Trulli

Alberobello is a unique city located in Puglia, Italy. It is known as the capital of Trulli, which are traditional dry stone huts with a corbelled roof

In 1996, The city of Alberobello became a Unesco World Heritage Site officially.

Is Alberobello worth visiting?

Definitely YES! We visited during Summer 2022, in July, and we loved it!
It’s a tiny city, so you can go for a half-day tour if you’d like.

And that’s what we did. We were staying in Monopoly, a neighboring city just around 35 minutes away by car, and decided to visit Alberobello for a stroll and lunch. We spent a total of 2.5-3 hours at the place.

In the capital of Trulli, there are A LOT of souvenir shops, restaurants, and ice cream shops. As I mentioned previously, we had lunch there. Still, next time we visit, we’ll go later and have just wine and some burrata and parma in one of the restaurants with an outdoor patio. You can’t beat those delicious Italian classics!

How to get to Alberobello

There are three ways you can get to Alberobello:

  1. By car
  2. Private Tours
  3. Public Transportation

How to get to Alberobello from Monopoli by public transportation

We usually do things by car, but we were in the middle of exchanging our Brazilian driver’s license for the European one, so we couldn’t rent a car when we traveled to Italy last Summer. So we went to Alberobello by bus and will share our experience here.

A 25-minute walk from the historic center of Alberobello will take you to the bus stop to Alberobello.

You can also take a bus instead of walking for 25 minutes, BUT the bus will take you 15 minutes from the bus stop. So it’s worth it to walk the whole way there.

It’s an easy walk—no ups and downs. Just walk on the sidewalk, and you’ll get there.

IMPORTANT: You must buy a bus ticket before going on the bus. They don’t allow you to pay for it once you get in. So I recommend buying it online and just showing it to the driver.

The bus company we took is called Trenitalia, the same one as the trains. You can check bus times and prices on their website by CLICKING HERE.

Leaving Alberobello

If you’re planning on returning to Monopoly or Polignano Al Mare after visiting Alberobello, pay attention to the bus time, especially the bus LINE!

People don’t respect a line; everybody wants to get in simultaneously once the bus arrives.

We were the last ones allowed to get in, as we had no idea how crazy that would be. So we were just lined up, thinking people would respect the order of whom arrived first and last.

So be careful! It doesn’t matter if you’re waiting for the bus longer than someone that just got to the bus station. You might lose the bus if it gets too full and there are no more spaces to sit down.

Other than that, Alberobello should be on your list when visiting Puglia. It’s such a unique and stunning place. Utterly different from everything else we had ever seen.
